The orange is a citrus that belongs in the same family with the grapefruit and the mandarine. It is widely popular, due to its aromatic flavour but also for its benefits to our health. The orange is one of the most common and popular fruit in the world, because of its ready accessibility and its delicious flavour. Besides the fact that it is delicious, the oranges contain many nutrients, such as vitamins A, B1 and C. An orange can provide us with almost 100% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin C.
Also oranges are a good source of amino acids, beta-carotene, folic acid, pectin, calcium, iron, iodine, phosphorus, manganese, sodium, chlorine, and zinc. An orange has over 170 different phytonutrients and more than 60 flavonoids, which have been shown to have anti-cancer and anti- inflammatory action, and strong antioxidant properties.
The combination of the high rate of antioxidants (vitamin C) and flavonoids in oranges makes the orange as one of the best fruit that helps promote optimal health. Also, it also helps in sexual health, the orange contains folic acid which is an essential nutrient for healthy sperm that protects it from genetic damage that can cause various problems.
It strengthens the immune system due to strong content of vitamin C and stimulates the production of white blood cells in our body, thus improving the immune system. Greece received the 3rd place in the years 2013-2015 on imports of oranges in Germany with a percentage of 2.8% of the total imports of that field.
